Teaching & Learning Principles
How we teach at Kaizen is based on Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction (B. Rosenshine, 2010). “These principles of Instruction are based on evidence from cognitive science, research into the classroom practices of ‘master teachers’ and into various cognitive supports such as meta-cognitive talk and scaffolding”.
How we ensure Continual Professional Development for all staff and teaching and learning for all children embeds new knowledge we follow the 10 step approach of:
- Presenting new material using small steps
- Provide models
- Provide scaffolds for tasks
- Ask questions
- Check for adult/student understanding
- Guide adult/student practice
- Obtain a high success rate
- Independent practice
- Daily review
- Weekly and monthly review
Learning Behaviour and relationships
At Kaizen, through our Thrive and positive relationship approach, positive learning environments are created and embedded from the outset. Key approaches include:
- Blending warmth, kindness and assertiveness
- Gaining focused attention
- Designing, rehearsing and reinforcing common class routines
- Setting and maintaining high expectations
- Creating a positive atmosphere through affirmative language
- Using choices and consequences systems for excellent behaviour
7 Key Strategies have been developed and again embedded to everyday practice which work in line with a 4 part lesson structure. Modelling, which is an absolute, is structured with the I do, we do, you do model. This creates consistency and known expectations for all children in all lessons.
At Kaizen we ensure these 7 strategies are embedded into our every day practice for all subjects
